Shih Tzus are very friendly little dogs. They are people-oriented. All they crave for is to sit quietly on your lap gazing devotedly into your eyes. Shih Tzus like being petted and cuddled. They cannot be called one-person dogs, loving all members of the family equally. This lap dog is absolutely what it is meant to be: a joy for the whole family and a faithful little friend.

Shih Tzus - Breeders - General Care

The Shih Tzu is a double-coated breed. The wonderful flowing hair of the dog requires regular grooming. If your life style does not allow you to find enough time to groom your longhaired pet, it is not the right breed for you.

The Shih Tzu's eyes are large and, therefore, vulnerable. The dog's owners are recommended to use human eyewash daily in order to remove any matter from eye corners. To remove pieces of food from the beard, a flea comb may be used.

Shih Tzus - Breeders - Health Risks

Shih Tzus have several hereditary health problems. Renal dysplasia belongs to very serious fatal kidney diseases. Male Shih Tzus are prone to kidney and bladder stones. As the breed has somewhat protruding eyes, eye lacerations are possible. Other health problems to be watched out for in Shih Tzus are respiratory difficulties, gum and tooth problems, heart diseases, and heat stroke.
