It is a good idea to consider different sources when buying Shih Tzus. A dog may come from your neighborhood, another state, or province, or even from another country. The main thing to remember is that your foremost goal is to buy carefully, but not too quickly. Ask breeders all sorts of questions. Find out how you are to act when coming across difficulties concerning grooming, training or health issues. A responsible breeder will always share his/her knowledge about Shih Tzus and supply you with addresses of veterinarians and grooming specialists.

You are not advised to buy from pet stores or backyard breeders. With these sources, you cannot be sure of the Shih Tzuh's background and genetic health. A responsible breeder should be willing to show you the quarters in which the litter is placed as well as all dogs and puppies, no matter whether they are meant for sale or not. Watch the puppies playing, and pay attention to their eyes, ears and coat's condition. Their teeth must be white and their gums should be of a pink color.

It does not take an expert to distinguish between a responsible breeder and the one interested only in profit. A true breeder should know the origin of Shih Tzuhs and be willing to show you how to groom the dogs belonging to this breed.
